Project Akura 2019-20

Akura is the signature Community Service project of the Rotaract Club of Colombo Mid City. I
n this particular project, we target a school in a rural area, which does not possess required infrastructure facilities and the students cannot sometimes afford for their educational needs. The Rotaract Club of Colombo Mid City has been successfully carrying out the project for three consecutive years, and this year's project took a bit of a new turn. It was conducted as two phases and few new additions were to be noticed this time!

Phase 01 of “Akura”,  was successfully concluded on 25th of November 2019 at H/Wetiya Dharmapala Vidyalaya,Siyambalanduwa as a seminar series. The seminar concept was added to the project “Akura” to improve scale of the project. The project chairperson Rtr.Dinu Induwara conducted the seminar in 2 sessions focusing on two main subjects; History & English. More than 130 students from H/Wetiya Dharmapala Vidyalaya & nearby schools participated in this seminar. Two exam preparatory questionnaires were given to the students for both the subjects and each student got the attention of the lecturer and other two Rotaractors made sure they kept focusing throughout the whole seminar. The Rotaractors were given great feedback from the students for coming and supporting them to get ready for the exam.

Phase 02 of “Akura” was successfully concluded on 29th of December 2019 at Kosgulana Vidyalaya, Mathugama. The main objective of this phase was to provide students the stationery they need for the upcoming year. Even Though this village is in Western province & has the basic needs completed, poverty has been a huge issue for the parents of the students of Kosgulana Vidyalaya. Most of them does not even have proper shelter to live. There were 200 students who are studying in this school & stationery packs were donated to all of them.

Akura being the signature project of our club, we are extremely delighted to see the project's success and as we conclude this year's Akura project we are excited to plan next year's Akura in a more sustainable way!
